There are challenging passages in the Bible that raise difficult questions for interpretation. For instance, in the Bible, the sky is hard (Genesis 1; Job 37) and the sun moves (Joshua 10). The Bible also contains language about slaves as property (Exodus 21), and there are commands for slaves to obey their masters, even when they are cruel (Ephesians 6; Colossians 3; 1 Peter 2).

Most now acknowledge that the sky is not hard, the sun does not move, and slavery is not morally permissible. So how do we interpret these things in the Bible? Was the Bible wrong about them? Did some misinterpret them? What do we believe about God’s inspiration of the Bible in light of such things? Have we carefully considered these questions and their implications?
